How does Thermavein work?
ThermaVein® is used by leading aesthetic clinics worldwide for the safe and instant removal of red veins and other vascular blemishes. Veins on the face, such as Spider Nevus can be unsightly but are quite simple to treat. ThermaVein® does not use laser, IPL or injections, and simply uses a process called Thermocoagulation
Thermocoagulation works by gently joining the two walls of the vein together.
What are thread veins or telangiectasia?
Telangiectasia is the medical name for blood vessels which are also often called spider veins, thread veins, red veins or broken veins, less than 2mm in diameter. They can be unsightly. Telangiectasia are small permanently enlarged capillaries or small veins that lie in the upper dermis and are usually dull to bright red. Normally they are linear in appearance but they may also be dot like markings. Some of these blood vessels are called spider naevi because they form small clusters that resemble a spider or a star. Accurate description for telangiectasia are:
- Thread veins
- Red veins
- Blood spots
- Dilated veins
- Spider naevi
- Spider veins
- Thread capillaries
- Vascular blemishes
What can be treated using thermocoagulation?
Red thread veins
Spider naevi
Milia
Skin tags
Vascular blemishes
What are milia?
Small, white cysts on the skin. Milia lie very superficially under the epidermis and present themselves as small white lipid-epithelium plugs.
How does thermocoagulation treat milia?
Milia can be treated easily with ThermaVein® which gently dries them out so that the keratinised centre is hardened and the natural healing process forces this out of the skin. As a result of treatment, the milia usually become slightly raised, they will come out of the skin under their own accord within a few days and patients must not squeeze.
What are skin tags?
Skin tags are small, soft, skin-coloured growths on the skin. Some people may have multiple of these, and they can in areas that catch on clothing. Skin tags are usually found on the neck, armpits, around the groin, or under the breasts. They can also grow on the eyelids or under the folds of the buttocks.
Removing them is a straightforward procedure and the results are instant. Small crusts will appear on the area treated after a day or two and will fall off naturally.
Am I suitable for this treatment?
ThermaVein® thermo-coagulation is contra-indicated in patients who:
- Suffer from infectious skin conditions
- Are pregnant
- Are epileptic
- Have a pacemaker
- Take anti – coagulants or anti-platelet medication
- Have fake tan product on the skin
How should I prepare for treatment?
Patients should come with bare skin, no makeup and no false tan on the skin to be treated. No skin preparation or anaesthetic is necessary.
What does the treatment feel like?
Most patients liken the sensation to a hair being pulled. The majority of patients do not require topical pain relief. When treating sensitive areas such as intra-nasal vessels, there may be some eye watering, this is more a physical reaction due to nerve endings than any sign of pain.
How long does the treatment take?
Generally 15 to 30 minutes.
What can I expect after my treatment?
Below is a usual occurrence: Instantaneous disappearance of the red thread veins. Skin will feel warm but should calm quickly, this can vary due to individual skin type and reaction to treatment. In the days following ThermaVein® treatment some larger vessels may appear to be visible – this is a normal occurrence; these vessels will gradually fade and be broken down by the body. Some redness, dryness and tiny micro crusts could be present for a few days or longer which is normal. Do not remove the crusting. Further treatments can be applied after a minimum of 28 days. You may require more than one treatment to achieve optimum results. Gentle washing of the skin, using Aloe Vera gel to soothe and you can use good quality mineral make-up and it will not affect results.
How many treatments will I require?
In some cases, more than one treatment may be necessary to achieve optimum results, especially where many vessels are present in the skin.
Can the treated veins resurface?
No, once a successful treatment has been completed the treated vein cannot resurface as it will cease to exist. If a patient is prone to the condition, then other veins may appear in similar areas but never the same vein.
When will I see the results?
The results are instantaneous, you will see that the veins have disappeared when you look in a mirror following the treatment. There will be some redness in the area and a little swelling, this will subside usually after a few hours. Long term results are dependent on following all the aftercare instructions that you will receive from the clinic.
What happens to the veins after treatment?
The sealed vein wall will be naturally absorbed by the body.
Are there any known side effects?
The patient suffers no bruising, scarring and there is no downtime – many people go back to work immediately after treatment. Also, there is no requirement to avoid sunlight, as with other treatments, although we do recommend sun protection as general skincare advice. Other treatments require patients to avoid the sun as the treatments may burn/thin the skin making it very vulnerable to the sun. Thermavein treatment doesn’t burn and is very accurate, most patients feel a little pinching sensation which we are informed is easily bearable.
What measures can you take to avoid more thread veins from occurring?
If you are prone to Telangiectasia you need to wear broad spectrum sun defence throughout the year and avoid sunbeds, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and harsh exfoliation (scrubs).
