What is High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)?
HIFU uses Focused Ultrasound to target the deep structural layers of the skin with heat, which it does without damaging the skin’s surface. Focus Dual HIFU is one of the few treatments that can reach the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS)—which was previously accessible only via surgery. The result is a natural lift with virtually no downtime. The heat generated in the dermal layer of the skin stimulates the fibroblast cells to produce strong, new collagen. As collagen production increases up to 12 weeks post treatment, this results in a more youthful, firm and refreshed look.
What is the main purpose of a HIFU treatment?
Collagen is important for skin health because it is a natural protein that promotes skin suppleness, firmness, hydration, and a youthful glow. We lose collagen as we age, the loss starts at the age of 25 and we lose 10% of our collagen every decade, which speeds up around the menopause. HIFU creates deep points of controlled heat trauma in the SMAS layer and in the dermis which stimulates cells called fibroblasts to produce collagen and elastin.
How does HIFU work?
HIFU is focussed ultrasound energy which can be directed at various depths in the skin depending on what is being targeted. Energy directed at the level of the dermis triggers new collagen production and thickening and tightening of the skin. Ultrasound energy targeted at the subcutaneous layer disrupt stubborn fat cells without damaging non-targeted areas. The treated cells are then flushed away via the body’s natural detoxification processes.
Energy directed as deep as the SMAS layer causes immediate contraction of this layer without damage to the skin surface or surrounding tissues, this creates immediate tightening and lifting.
How many treatments will you need?
It’s important to note that everyone is unique. A treatment plan will be determined for you at your consultation and depending on the extent of laxity, sun damge or fatty tissue and your age it is recommended that patients have 1 to 3 treatments to achieve their best results. This is typically every 4 to 6 weeks, with top-up sessions being performed as required (usually once or twice a year).
When are results seen with HIFU?
As the skin’s wound healing response is triggered the skin naturally lifts, firms, and tightens over time. You will see that results continue to improve up to 12 weeks post treatment. We expect results to last 1 to 2 years, although this is dependent on your lifestyle and maintenance.
How does HIFU work on the body to tone and tighten?
Yes, HIFU is one of the major energy based treatments for body contouring, both decreasing fat and cellulite and tightening the overlying skin at the same time. It is very important to have a treatment which tightens the skin at the same time as decreasing the underlying fat to combat having saggy, crepy skin after weight loss. The overall quality of the skin is improved and bumpy skin due to cellulite is diminished. With HIFU we treat the body at various depths; 1.5 mm for thickening the dermis, 4.5 mm for the superficial fat and 13 mm for deeper subcutaneous adipose tissue.
Fat cells are destroyed when energy above 56 degrees heats & disturbs the cell membranes of adipose cells. Destroyed fat cells are engulfed by macrophagocytes and the body’s lymphatic system then naturally disposes of the damaged cells.
Is HIFU painful?
The Focus Dual by Lynton Laser has safety assist transducers (SAT) that emit high intensity ultrasound waves in a unique pattern that allows for safer and more comfortable treatments compared to other HIFU devices on the market. Patients usually describe HIFU with the Focus Dual as a comfortable treatment, sometimes describing a little heat or a mild prickling sensation.
Is there any downtime after a HIFU treatment?
As the HIFU treatment is non-invasive, with no needles or laser, there is virtually no downtime. Patients may experience slight redness following the treatment, and some patients do experience minor swelling, tingling, or tenderness. All of which are very mild and temporary. Patients are able to immediately return to their daily activities and no special recovery measures are needed.
