PDO Threads, short for Polydioxanone threads, are a type of medical-grade thread used in a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure aimed at lifting, tightening, and rejuvenating the skin.
What are PDO threads?
PDO (Polydioxanone) threads consist of an absorbable polymer suture like material which is both flexible and durable making it an ideal material for minimally invasive skin rejuvenation, tightening and lifting. PDO thread material has been used in surgery for many years.
There are 3 main types of PDO threads currently available:
Mono threads– smooth threads without barbs about the thickness of fine hair inserted via a fine needle that mainly tighten the skin and provide a small amount of lift.
Cog threads– barbed threads which hook onto the soft tissue under the skin’s surface to lift sagging tissue.
Screw threads– have intertwined threads around the insertion needle for the purpose of stimulating good volume restoration to sunken areas of skin.
We only use mono threads and screw threads at the clinic as we believe the cog threads too aggressive and prone to cause complications.
How do PDO threads work?
PDO (polydioxanone) threads can improve the appearance of sagging skin, PDO can also help promote the stimulation of collagen and neovascularisation, which helps to improve skin elasticity, texture, fine lines, and volume. The threads form a support scaffold to help hold up and support the skin and they stimulate the formation of a collagen mesh around each thread.
The threads are biodegradable and naturally dissolve within about six months; however, the results from collagen stimulation will last for up to two years giving the tissues a more lifted and youthful appearance.
What issues do PDO threads address?
- Skin rejuvenation as a result of collagen stimulation
- Skin tightening & lifting
- Revolumisation of facial volume loss due to ageing
What areas can be treated?
Areas suitable for treatment include:
- Jowls and your Jawline
- Flaccidity of skin below jaw
- Under-Eye Area
- Cheeks
- Neck Area
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Flabby tummy tissue
What kind of results can be achieved?
The first effects can be observed immediately after the treatment, and after about 2 weeks, the process of collagen and elastin production begins. This process lasts until the thread dissolves (approx. 180-240 days), and the effect of the treatment lasts up to 24 months.
Although individual results may vary, common results achieved with PDO include support of sagging skin and thickening of the skin. PDO threads are best used alongside a skin booster injectable or microneedling for added collagen boosting.
What does the procedure involve?
The area is then cleansed and disinfected. Then multiple fine needles containing fine threads similar to a hair shaft are inserted under the skin. The fine needles are then removed leaving the fine thread underneath the skin.
How many threads will I need?
The number of threads is determined by the amount of lift and improvement required.
Duration and the degree of improvement varies, depending on the age of the patient at the time of the thread lift procedure, the degree of sagging, and the number of threads used.
Is it painful?
No, pain and discomfort are minimal during the procedure, only a few very slight pinches may be felt during insertion and there is usually no pain at all after the threads have been inserted.
What are possible side effects to having PDO threads inserted?
The common side effects are generally connected with the injection sites and usually resolve themselves within a day to two.
They include:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Mild soreness
