Testosterone Replacement Therapy Consultation

A highly specialised Testosterone Therapy (TTh) service is available at the clinic which deals with this often-overlooked area of health despite being the second most common endocrine disorder for men (For more information we use the BSSM Guidelines). Dr Hughes has a special interest in men’s health and medical background having worked in hospital medicine in urology and in the pharmaceutical industry at the highest level as Global Medical Director in Men’s Health for Besins (the pharmaceutical company which manufactures Testogel).

Consultations are approximately one hour long which will include medical history, specific international men’s health questionnaires and a recommendations re blood testing, medications etc.

The emphasis and philosophy of the clinic is a preventative approach enabling the body and mind to optimise hence there is a strong focus and advice on exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management and lifestyle habits that reduce inflammation in the body. All consultations for hormonal health are in a relaxed, confidential environment.

All men as they grow older have a gradual decline in their testosterone levels. This is a natural part of the ageing process. After the age of about thirty years this natural decline in testosterone levels progresses at a rate of about 2% per annum. In some men the rate of loss of testosterone leads to sub-physiological levels which impacts general well-being, libido, mood, energy and weight.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TTh) can compensate for lowered testosterone levels and reduce the severity of symptoms such as impotence and depression that can be associated with age related testosterone deficiency (TD).

For Testosterone Replacement Therapy – the price for an initial consultation is €150 + €50 for a testosterone blood test. If testosterone is low a more comprehensive male hormone & male health blood test screening (which includes full blood count, prostate specific antigen and a lipid profile is performed before testosterone is prescribed.

Weight Loss Consultation (includes prescription)

During a weight loss consultation we discuss your medical history, past history of weight loss efforts, motivations, your BMI measurements and a target weight is discussed and jointly agreed on. If you do not have any medical contraindications to GLP-1 agonists or GIP and GLP-1 agonists (the weight loss medications) such as a history of medullary thyroid cancer, type 1 diabetes or pancreatitis & your BMI is 27 or above you will be given a prescription & shown how to self inject.  You will be given advice on what to expect while taking this medicine, how to combat side effects and how to titrate the dose to a dosage that works to produce weight loss results, whilst not being too debilitating.

As you continue your weight loss journey you may book in again for a face to face follow up appointment if you feel the need or want to switch over to a different medication and we provide continuous  support & a repeat prescription service via WhatsApp.

Menopause/Perimenopause Consultation

Hormonal health is absolutely pivotal to how we feel as women and optimal hormonal health helps ensure the health and quality of our bodies, skin and hair.

Menopause is the medical term given to the time in a woman’s life when she is no longer producing important hormones from her ovaries. A woman is considered to be menopausal when she has had a full year without a natural period. The average age for menopause in Ireland is 51.

Perimenopause is the time before the menopause when your periods change (they can be lighter/ heavier/ more or less frequent) and reflect a change and fluctuation in the production of hormones from your ovaries. Symptoms often start around the age of 45.

This loss of hormonal production can have a significant impact on your emotional, physical and sexual wellbeing. Your long-term health is also affected by losing these hormones and the risks of heart disease and osteoporosis (bone density loss) significantly increase from the time of menopause onwards.

Oestrogen is an important hormone for our health and wellbeing. We have oestrogen receptors throughout our bodies and low levels can have an impact in many different ways. In particular, we know that the risk of heart disease (cardiovascular disease) and brittle bone disease (osteoporosis) rise significantly when we lose oestrogen. There are many different ways of managing these health risks and symptoms.

The most effective treatment for symptoms of the menopause is to replace the hormones your body no longer produces. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) contains oestrogen, a progestogen (or progesterone) if required, and in many cases, testosterone. HRT also protects your future health from osteoporosis, heart disease and type 2 diabetes and helps sustain the quality of your skin and hair. For most women the benefits of taking HRT outweigh any risks.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Consultation

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic disorder characterised by anovulation, hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance. It is the most common endocrine disorder effecting premenopausal women, with a prevalence ranging from 5 to 10%.

Symptoms of PCOS include irregular periods, fertility issues, hirsutism (male pattern hair growth), male pattern balding, abdominal bloating, acne and mood swings. Symptoms may differ depending on the individual woman.

If you suspect you may have polycystic ovarian syndrome it is important to get a diagnosis and to be treated as there may be long term metabolic implications

Bone Health/Osteoporosis Screening Consultation

If you have concerns about your bone health and the strength of your bones, perhaps due to a family history of osteoporosis, a recent low impact fracture, history of an eating disorder, steroid use or a vegan diet then a bone health screening consultation with investigations such as FRAX score, menstrual history, bloods & DEXA scan may be a good step for you to take.

Sick Leave Consultation - Video consultation or phone call consultation

After booking your online consultation, you’ll get a link to access your online video consultation or you will receive a call from our doctor (phone consultation).

Please note: This consultation does not include a treatment plan.

Your employer may ask you for a medical certificate from your GP when you are on sick leave. For example, you may have to provide a medical certificate if you are off sick for more than 2 days in a row. The medical certificate should state the date you are likely to return to work. If you are likely to be off sick for a long time, your employer may need weekly medical certificates.

This is an electronic sick leave (a letter which is emailed to you) and it is not submittable to the Department of Social Protection. If you need a certificate for this purpose you should visit a GP who has a GMS listing.

Sick leave is a right to be absent from work during sickness and return to one’s job when recovered
The doctor will assess your medical condition, and if the patient exhibits symptoms that prohibit working, they will issue a medical certificate.
